Frequently Asked Questions About
Lip Fillers

Today’s sophisticated dermal fillers are most commonly made from man-made hyaluronic acid. This is near identical to the hyaluronic acid found naturally in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid is able to retain 1,000 times its own weight in water. For that reason, it’s a great ingredient for hydrating the skin. This means it also works really well as a substance for injectable treatments. It gives a more natural look, and dissolves over time or can be reversed if you do not like the overall result or you feel your lips are too plump.

Due to the fact that hyaluronic acid is found naturally within the body (although in lesser quantities as we age), our bodies naturally accept it. This makes it much safer than other filler substances. It is not permanent, so very worst case scenario if you change your mind, it’s easily sorted.

Lip fillers last about 4-6 months, but results can vary depending on the client. How long the lip filler last depends on how fast your metabolism is able to break the filler down. We recommend starting conservatively and building up for the effect you desire. This is because, as with anything, it is much easier to increase until you are happy than have to resort to reversing a treatment.

In some cases, lip filler patients may experience swelling in the lip area after having the treatment carried out. The amount of lip filler used on a patient can also have an impact on the risk of swelling occurring. This is a completely normal side effect of lip injections and tends to show through after two days of treatment, before reducing and returning to normality after two weeks. If lip swelling does occur, then patients can apply ice to the lips using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease any swelling, itching, bruising or pain that may occur as a result of the treatment.

Pain is different for different people, but I can do my best to explain the sensation! After the clinician applies numbing cream, you will feel a short sharp scratch and some pressure. After the clinician injects the filler, your lips may feel a dull throbbing sensation but this shouldn’t be too painful with the numbing cream applied.

Afterwards, your lips may swell up slightly, but this is the body’s natural response to injury (you are having a substance injected into your skin after all!) and this should subside after a few days. Your lips may also feel slightly tender for a few days, a side effect with most aesthetic and medical injections.

Apart from the negative health issues associated with smoking, there is no reason why you cannot smoke after receiving a treatment of lip fillers. Smoking after lip fillers will not affect the outcome of your treatment. However, smoking is known to dry out the skin and has been linked to premature ageing, so we would advise you refrain from smoking immediately post-procedure.

There is no medical reason why you cannot apply makeup including lip gloss or lipstick directly after lip fillers. A treatment can leave the lips feeling slightly tender, so it is recommended that you leave it a day before applying makeup to the treatment area.
